Kingskerswell — Devon, England

Kingskerswell is a quaint village in Devon, which is ideally located for access to Dartmoor National Park as well as being minutes away from Torquay along the coast.

KingskerswellThere are several listed buildings in the village for those interested in historical antiquities, including the Church of St. Mary, built in the 14th century that has three l4th century effigies within the church. The effigies are believed to represent Sir John Dinham and his two wives whose decaying medieval manor house stands near the church. The fortified manor house has been referred to as a castle in many travelogues, however, manor house or castle it is certainly of historical interest.

Part of the charm of the old village is its thatched roofed cottages, the ancient church and manor house and the brook running through the churchyard; as well as the rural appearance due to the orchards and gardens which still occupy parts of the village. Potentially there may be considerable interest in archaeological finds which may still be viable in parts of the village that have not been modernized. Longtime residents value the town's rustic appearance, and waged a sixty-year long battle concerning plans to build a town by-pass, a battle which the town finally succeeded to win.

The village spreads across the floor of the Aller valley, within walking distance of Newton Abbot, with the original part of the village situated around the medieval church on the west side of the valley. The open space on the north and west with its fields and hedgerows all add to the rural atmosphere that once prevailed in Kingskerswell. The village atmosphere is conducive to a pleasant stay or visit, with easy access to Dartmoor National Park with waterfalls, river walks and the beautiful Dartmoor valley; and only minutes to the Coastal towns with numerous attractions available, or a visit to "Agatha Christie Mile", with a museum dedicated to her life and work situated in the coastal town of Torquay.
